Relax and immerse yourself in the tranquil flow of life in the friendly Tico beach town of Bahia Ballena. Stunning sunsets, palm-fringed beaches, and clear blue water create a stunning backdrop for a week of service and exploration in Costa Rica’s diverse marine and coastal environments. Service by the Sea
The village of Bahia Ballena is a small coastal community that embraces a laid-back lifestyle reminiscent of the vibe in Costa Rica’s beach towns 20 years ago. You’ll work closely with the people in Bahia Ballena and the nearby communities on projects that will support sustainable development and help you get to know the community. Build a classroom, paint a community center, play pick-up soccer with local kids, assist with a local turtle conservation effort, or clean up the beaches in Marino Ballena National Park. Learn about the impact tourism and development have had on the
community and environment, and find out what you can do to help.
Fun in the Sun
When you take a break from service projects, grab your surfboard and head to the beach for lessons from local surf experts at Marino Ballena National Park. They’ll show you the best breaks and have you riding the waves in no time. You’ll also have the chance to take full advantage of the Costa Rican landscape. Rappel down hidden waterfalls (optional), hike through the rainforest on a trail that leads to a spectacular ocean outlook, play big games of beach soccer, or simply relax in a hammock and read a book. Marino Ballena National Park protects a huge swath of the Pacific, and its clear waters are home to beautiful reefs and a host of exotic marine life. Take a boat trip to nearby islands and head beneath the surface for a look at this teeming underwater world. Then climb back on deck and keep your eyes on the water as you look for breaching humpback whales and frolicking bottlenose dolphins. Back in town you’ll learn Latin cooking with Tica women or practice Spanish with your guides and the villagers. At night, kick back and relax with your friends in comfortable accommodations near the Pacific Ocean.

*** PLEASE NOTE: The itinerary described above is typical but not set in stone as work and optional activities vary depending upon the needs of the various communities, the tides, the quality of the waves, as well as the weather. This itinerary is designed to give you a good, general idea of the day to day schedule and activities on this program but may be changed during the summer as staff see fit. Students will work hard on this program, and will probably get wet, muddy, and bug-bitten in the process. This is all part of the rural Costa Rican service experience and is a small sacrifice when compared with the positive impact this program has on local communities and on RP participants.
• Surf Boards - Rustic Pathways boards are available however experienced surfers may prefer to surf on their own boards. Airlines typically charge extra to transport surfboards.
• Board Shorts – you can bring a few extra pairs of “boardies” – bathing suits for surfing.
• Rash Guards – if you have one, feel free to bring it. It is a shirt that can be worn while surfing to prevent a rash from forming on your chest when it rubs against the board. Long sleeve ones can also help protect your arms from the sun.
• Waterproof Sunblock – for use while in the water. Many surfers also choose to bring some form of sunblock with Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide in it to further protect their faces.
• Flip Flops – a must for being on the beach.
• Clothes/Shoes that can get used and abused - during service projects clothes often get paint, cement, and dirt on them and so we recommend you bring clothes you don’t mind permanently damaging.
