Bienvenidos a Baja Sur de Mexico!
Welcome to Mexico’s southern Baja. Endless miles of virgin beaches, friendly locals and the towering crags of the southern Sierra all merge here. The result is the remarkable backdrop to this rewarding adventure of surfing, service, sand and sun. Standing on the cactus-spotted bluffs, watch skillful local fisherman negotiate the crashing swells of the Pacific just as their grandfathers did. Spot coyotes and foxes on a desert hike up the dry riverbeds that lead to the peaks of the Southern Sierra. Bask in the golden morning light while you paddle to catch some of Baja’s most beloved waves at Los Cerritos, or stroll along the picturesque Playa de Las Palmas.
Tucked between these breaking waves and mighty peaks is the small town of Todos Santos. Founded by Jesuit missionaries nearly 300 years ago, Todos Santos is a gleaming jewel surrounded by Baja’s vast desert. Home to artisans, avid surfers, mango-laden orchards, and friendly locals, Todos Santos has been recognized by the Mexican government as one of only 15 “Pueblos Magicos,” or “Magical Villages,” for its unique blend of history, art, and beauty. Behind the town’s sleepy surface and century-old brick-and-adobe facades dwells a vibrant and close-knit community who will become your friends, teachers, and students throughout your stay here.
Make a Real Difference
As Todos Santos begins to outgrow its historical isolation, there
is a pressing need for English language skills and sustainable
development. Half your day will be spent working in the local
community on a wide range of meaningful service projects.
Help local children grow into future leaders by tutoring English
at a local after-school center. Work with these excited children
cleaning up the local pueblos and beaches. Other days, pack
up the vans and hit the road to spend time with the children
of migrant workers at local farms. These workers and their
families live with only the barest necessities, and their spirited
children will love playing games and working on art projects
with you. Traveling to these camps is a rare treat, and the heartwarming
smiles of the children here are sure to be one of
the highlights of your trip..
Surf, Sun, and Siestas
While the afternoons will be spent sharing smiles with local
people, most mornings will be spent riding the renowned
waves of Los Cerritos. Whether you are an avid short boarder,
a laid-back long boarder, or a complete beginner, Cerritos
has the perfect wave for you. You will also have ample time to
bask in the Baja waters. For many, the highlight of the entire
program is the rare chance to snorkel with sea lions and parrot
fish in the crystal blue waters of the Sea of Cortez.
What Are You Doing This Summer?
You’ll leave Todos Santos with a real sense of accomplishment,
not only in your finely honed surfing abilities, but also in
knowing that you have left a positive and lasting mark on a
wonderful and deserving community. Baja Service and Surf is
an excellent blend of adventure and service for first-time
travelers looking for an exotic adventure surprisingly close
to home. It is also sure to amaze veteran globe trotters looking
for a new place to explore.
Upon arrival at the Los Cabos airport you will be greeted by Rustic Pathways Staff and transported to the town of Todos Santos. In the late afternoon and evening get settled into the Villas La Mar, have a brief orientation, and get to know the other students and your guides.
Day 2
(Wednesday)
Service and Surf
In the morning we will be starting our community service projects. We work mainly with two different organizations while we are in Todos Santos. Wednesdays are generally set aside to work with Fortalecer, a local non-profit that is working with children living in the migrant agricultural camps outside Todos Santos. You will be part of a “classroom on wheels” that brings toys, games, art supplies and other materials to children with very little access to many of things we take for granted here in the United States. Some days, this project may run in the mornings and we will surf in the afternoons at the Los Cerritos surf break or other nearby spots. The waves are appropriate for surfers of all abilities, from beginners to experienced surfers, so no previous surfing experience is necessary. For those who do not wish to surf the entire time, boogie boards are made available and there is about a mile stretch of beach to explore and relax on. In the evening there will be time to email or call home, or just relax at the villas.
Day3 (Thursday)
More Surfing and Service
After a morning surf session and a delicious Mexican lunch, the afternoon will be dedicated to working with La Palapa Society on an after school program for local students in Todos Santos. You will focus your time tutoring English to these eager students, though we frequently also do art projects, play sports, paint murals, and facilitate other summer camp-like activities in the local community. Most weeks there will also be the option of participating in a cooking class at the famous Hotel California.
Day 4 (Friday)
Surf and Work with Fortalecer
In the morning the group will have breakfast and travel to the migrant worker camp for another morning of service with the children. After lunch head to the beach for an afternoon surf session. In the evening hang out with your friends at the villas and relax.
Day5 (Saturday)
Service, Surfing, and Shopping
The Saturday morning service activity can vary depending on the week and the needs of the local community. Potential activities may include a beach clean-up, community beautification projects, or teaching local kids about water safety. Spend the afternoon surfing and shopping for gifts at the local shops in Todos Santos. At night there may be the possibility of having a group campfire and playing games on the beach near the villas.
Day6 (Sunday)
Visit to La Paz
Sunday is a day of rest and relaxation. The group will travel to La Paz where students may choose to take an amazing optional boat trip to the Island of Espiritu Santo. This full day tour visits deserted beaches, views interesting rock formations and stops at a local sea lion colony to go snorkeling.** Truly a once in a lifetime experience! Those who do not opt for the boat trip may spend the day visiting the local town of La Paz, its beaches, and its souvenir shops.
**This is an optional activity that comes at an additional cost.
Day7 (Monday)
Las Day of Surf and Service
On your last day in Todos Santos wake up for one last morning surf in the refreshing waves of Baja Mexico. After lunch finish the week of service at La Palapa Society by wrapping up the projects that you have been working with the children during the past week. After a final group dinner pack your bags and clean the villas in preparation for the next day’s departure.
Day8 (Tuesday)
Heading back Home
After breakfast depart from the villas to the San Jose del Cabo airport and board your flight back home.
***PLEASE NOTE: The itinerary above is not set in stone and may be changed by the staff running this program as they see fit. It is designed to give you a good idea of the day to day schedule and activities that the students will be participating in.***
